The law on Fire Safety

Employers have a legal obligation to ensure they reduce the risk of fire and protect their employees from harm caused by fire. Please refer to the gov.uk site for Fire safety law and guidance documents for business.

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) require employers to assess the risk of fires and explosions arising from work activities involving dangerous substances, and to eliminate or reduce these risks.

If you are an employer, building owner or you simply occupy a building you must carry out a fire safety risk assessment and keep it up to date. In line with current legislation, your duties include:

  • Assess - Undertake a fire safety risk assessment of your premises.
  • Identify - Identifying the fire safety measures necessary as a result of the fire safety risk assessment outcome.
  • Implement - Carry out the appropriate fire safety measures using risk reduction principles.
  • Maintain - Put in place fire safety arrangements for the ongoing control and review of the fire safety measures.
  • Comply -  Ensure you comply with any specific requirements of the fire safety regulations.
  • Record - Any information recorded should be available for inspection by the enforcing authority

This course is for both employers and employees. The one (1) day course is the choice of many employers to ensure they are meeting the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

This qualification is intended for those that are undertaking the role of a fire marshal in a workplace. The qualification builds on the Level 1 Award in Fire Awareness at Work (RQF) and includes safe evacuation and personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPS).

Pre-Requisites: This qualification is available to those over 14 years, however employers should ensure that fire marshals are suitable to undertake the role of a fire marshal. Candidates should be at least a level 1 numeracy and literacy or equivalent

Unit 1

  •          Understand the hazards and risks associated with fire in the workplace
  •         Know how to use a range of fire controls
  •          Understand the importance of a prompt and safe evacuation of the workplace
  •         Know how to support individuals during an evacuation
  •         Understand the roles of the fire marshal in the workplace

Assessment methods Candidates are assessed for this qualification using Multiple-choice question paper.
